Question about gargoyle mining...

I recently picked up my shovel and went mining on my gargoyle. When i went to set the shovel to mine ore and gems it wouldn't let me set it. Says i havent learned the skill yet. I used to be able to mine ore and gems when i was an elf. Any ideas?
