Wireless issue

Im looking at you vortex.

Here is the skinny,

I have a HP HDX18 (the big tank), it has a wireless wifi, bluetooth card in it. The card seems to work. I can start the computer, and get anywhere from 5-10 mins of connectivity. Then I go down to connected to local, with limited connectivity. So I disconnect and then it wont see any wireless signals (even though there are atleast 10, one being mine). My other work laptop still sees my router, and connects to it.

Now if I restart the computer, I again have 5-10 mins of wireless before it just quits seeing it.

I have done several virus scans, both with my AVG Free, Bit Defenders online scan, and house call online scan. I have also checked spyware, with spybot search and destory (also the 2 online scans search for them too). Im clean according to 3 sources.

I have uninstalled the device from device manager, and drivers. And re-installed a newer driver, direct download from intel themselves.

Yes I am running vista, but it just acted up a few days ago. I have 7 to put on, just havent done it yet.

Any ideas on what might fix it in the meantime?

There's a program you can try called wlan optimizer. 

I ended up hard wiring my box instead of going the wireless route, no issues now.  *shrug*  I f'd around with it for over a year. I'm sure Hoffs was laughing everytime I lost connection.

I fixed my lap top with a ball peen hammer.

Most likely a bad wireless card, but try the following...

Turn off bluetooth and connect.

Check your TCP/IP settings and make sure you are letting the router set the ip and dns.

Use the wireless zero configuration to connect instead of the one that came with the system.

When you get limited connection, go to dos and do an ipconfig /renew and see if that reconnects you.

Questions...

Are you on 802.11 a/b/g or n?

Do you have a microwave or 2.4 Ghz cordless phone nearby?

Have you tried connecting to the router directly (thru cat5 cable)?

Im wireless G. I do have a microwave about 20' away, but it has worked for months on end in the living room, and just acked up the other day. Maybe a week ago. So I dont think its interferance. I can connect directly, thats how im doing it now. Took the cat5 outta my PS3, and plugged in the laptop.

Ill try a renew, Though I do it through windows (force it to refresh IP, or even reset the router, and no go). Ill try the dos prompt route.

Sounds like a issue with the wireless card. They can be very sensitive in laptops (little wire that bends and shorts out easily).

If you can, borrow a usb wireless device and try that. If it works, you probably have a bad wireless card.
