Title: The Bees
Post by: Ian James on April 25, 2009, 03:31:47 PM
Checked in on the bees today. I lost one hive over the winter, they appeared to have starved despite the fact that they had more stores than the other two hives that survived, guess they just couldn't move the cluster to the food.

Find the queen!

I always thought the queen would be a bit larger than the working bees...

Oh well, good job Troop!

Well, she is a bit larger, in that she is longer, but she's not as fat. More slender.

I was thinking of keeping a beehive just to help my flowering clovers and alot of the pantings I have around to attaract good bugs. Are they hard to maintain?  And can i just put them out in the woods with my sheep?

Having bee's would be cool. Maybe I'll read up more on them.

My only experience with bee's (or maybe they were hornets) was when I was about 8 and I stuck a stick into a hive. That was a bad mistake that I shall never repeat. :o :o :o

I am pretty allergic to bee stings, but what a surprise seeing as how I am allergic to practically everything!

They aren't hard to maintain at all...  When I first got them I would go down everyweek and poke around. Now I go down and open them up in April, then maybe again in July to check on things and pull honey if it's ready, then pull all the honey in August and check them again in October to see if they need to be fed before winter.

If you're interested in getting into it, visit these two sites, much information. .
